Complexities like miniaturization, grip and sensing, accurate simulation testing as well as the application of AI and machine learning are hurdles that researchers must overcome to achieve robotic hands that are as capable as human hands.In this article, we will discuss the complexities of dexterous hand development and offer some insights into how they are being solved using examples from <a href="https://www.wevolver.com/profile/shadow.robot" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Shadow Robot</a>, a company known for creating one of the most advanced dexterous robotic hands in the world.&nbsp;<h1 dir="ltr">Complexities of Dexterous Robotic Hands</h1>Key areas of robotics development like miniaturization, sensing, and control are particularly complex when integrated with dexterous hands. Researchers can perform stress tests on the system in less time and without damaging physical hardware or putting the safety of humans at risk[14].However, creating realistic simulations for dexterous robotic hands poses another set of challenges. One of the biggest challenges of simulation testing is to create a simulation that is realistic enough to be useful. If the simulation is unable to replicate the kind of environment that the robot will operate in and adapt to, then the data from the simulation cannot reliably be used to improve the robot[15].Another challenge of simulation testing is the lack of reproducibility and the resource costs associated with simulators[16]. Maximizing human abilities, passing on skills and abilities to new generations, eliminating societal inequality – achieving these goals will require solving a variety of problems affecting existing educational and training methods and the development and deployment of new methods. Education and training are indispensable to the upbringing of a new generation to shoulder future responsibilities and to generating the driving force needed to change society and industry to make them both more vigorous and more sustainable.&nbsp;In response to this social need, efforts making use of the latest technologies to develop and implement new educational methods are becoming more active. Even though education is the most effective way to eliminate poverty, which is one of the sustainable development goals (SDGs), there are many people throughout the world who lack educational opportunities. If ICT can be put to use enabling people to receive instruction, educational opportunities will become more flexible, and the likelihood of overcoming the problem of unequal opportunity will increase.Another goal is to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of education by providing individualized instruction customized to match the specific characteristics of each learner and the state of their educational progress. When large numbers of students are all taught the same material using the same methods, it is inevitable that some students will find classes insufficiently challenging while others will have difficulty keeping up and eventually fall behind.One reason that a uniform approach to education has been the norm until now is that the number of teachers is much smaller than the number of students. If technology makes it possible to carefully monitor factors such as the progress, ability, and personality of each individual student and to tailor the instruction to match, perhaps slumbering talent will blossom, and students will awaken to new possibilities they were not aware of and will be able to acquire knowledge and skills more effectively.<h2>Expanding applications of Edu Tech in schools, workplaces, and fields such as sports and the arts</h2>Some specific examples of how Edu Tech can be applied in new ways to education and training in schools, workplaces, and a variety of industries are presented below (Figure 3).<img src="https://images.wevolver.com/eyJidWNrZXQiOiJ3ZXZvbHZlci1wcm9qZWN0LWltYWdlcyIsImtleSI6ImZyb2FsYS8xNzAwMTA0NjE2NzQ4LXZhcmlvdXMtdGVjaC02LTNfZW4ucG5nIiwiZWRpdHMiOnsicmVzaXplIjp7IndpZHRoIjo5NTAsImZpdCI6ImNvdmVyIn19fQ==" style="width: 766px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib">Figure 3 Expanding applications for Edu TechOur first example is the application of Edu Tech in primary and secondary education. In March 2019, Japan launched the “Global and Innovation Gateway for All (GIGA) School Project,”*1 which aims to promote the training of young people able to meet the demands of the future by distributing a computer terminal to each and every elementary and secondary school student in the country. This initiative is intended to realize an educational environment that encourages the individuality of each student and promotes creativity optimized to each learner. Tablet computers that can connect to the network via a cellular or Wi-Fi® link are used to enable close sharing in the learning process between each student and the teacher as lessons proceed.In the past, classes usually proceeded in a style characterized by the teacher speaking from a podium at the front of the classroom, with a few students occasionally answering questions the teacher put to them. By using tablets, the teacher and all the students can share in the taking of notes by individual students or the process of figuring out answers to questions. This has made it possible not only for the teacher to see which students got the right answer, but also for everyone to share the train of thought leading to the answer, for individual students to help each other, and for the proficiency level of the entire class to rise. What’s more, using the camera functionality, students can do things like summarizing the results of their observations in science class or dynamically expressing their thoughts in videos they shoot and edit themselves, thereby developing their ability to make presentations.Our second example involves the use of Edu Tech by a company in the manufacturing industry to quickly get new employees up to speed on factory procedures currently being performed by experienced workers. In factories where a wide variety of products are produced in small quantities, with many different products being produced on the same line, substantial variations in production efficiency and the quality of finished products can arise due to differences in the skill level of the workers. The most skilled workers have learned through experience how to perform operations precisely and without wasted effort. Since their know-how and skills are hard to express in writing, it can be difficult to convey the key points and tricks of the trade to the newer workers.There are now companies that use cameras to capture the work of experienced employees and their actions on the line. Motion tracking technology is then used to convert the videos into digital data, and AI analysis is employed to determine which actions can be linked to improvements in productivity and quality. Key points for improving skills can then be presented in visual form and used in the training of new workers. Training workers using materials incorporating visualized information, and monitoring the actions of the workers undergoing training and providing feedback in real time make it possible for new employees to attain the same level of skill as the experienced workers much more quickly.Our third example involves technology currently in the research stage. It uses Edu Tech to allow learners to experience the techniques of skilled individuals in areas such as crafts, the arts, and sports, enabling them to improve their skills effectively and rapidly. In one method of teaching the subtle aspects of using a brush in painting or Japanese calligraphy, the student holds the brush and the teacher grasps the student’s hand in order to demonstrate aspects such as the correct application of pressure and the experience of moving the brush. A similar method of instruction is often used in the world of sports, where the learner is assisted by the coach and helped to experience the correct posture and movements. By conveying the sense felt only by one who has mastered the skill, the learner is enabled to achieve mastery quickly. This method of teaching can be very effective, but it requires one-on-one training of the learner by an experienced instructor and therefore cannot be easily adopted by everyone.Technology currently under development utilizes new technologies such as virtual reality (VR), haptic feedback, motion tracking, and robotics to convert the body posture and movements of the instructor into digital data and then convey them to the learner. For example, there is already technology that reproduces using a robot arm the subtle movements and application of pressure of an expert Japanese calligrapher. By using this technology to store the brush manipulation of the master as digital data, it can then be reproduced anywhere and at any time for practice.Education is said to be the surest and most effective investment we can make. It is also indispensable to the continued development of society necessary for a happy human life. Some people worry that the advancement of AI and robots will deprive people of their jobs. But depending on how it is used, technology can expand human possibilities and encourage human growth. Science fiction films portray the idea relatively simply: the terminator – who either tries to destroy or rescue humanity – is such a perfect humanoid robot that in most cases it is superior to humans. But how well do humanoid robots perform nowadays away from the cinema screen? (Video: Agility Robotics)<h2>Comparing apples with apples</h2>The first scientific challenge was to develop criteria that permit a meaningful comparison between humans and machines. An industrial robot painting car bodies on a production line does this faster, for longer and more precisely than a human. It is especially developed for this but also does not have any other abilities.Riener therefore excluded such robots from the study: “We humans shape our environment according to our criteria and needs. If robots are to support us in a meaningful way, they need to work in this manmade environment. We therefore quickly arrived at robots that are similar to humans, at least anatomically.” It is for this reason that Riener exclusively examined humanoid robots for the study and integrated 27 relevant specimens into his research.Yet the researchers also defined certain selection criteria within this robot type. “For example, for a robot that has rollers rather than legs it would be fairly easy to roll faster than a human can run – but we didn’t want to compare apples with pears,” explains Riener. Only those robots were therefore selected that had two or four legs so that they were also able to climb steps. They also need to have a slim figure in order to pass through doors, and a certain height (at least 50 cm) with arms and hands (or extendable by arms and hands) so that they can also pick up objects on a tray or shelf. In order to be able to work with and support humans, they should also be quiet and not give off any exhaust emissions. &nbsp;<img src="https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/wevolver-project-images/froala%2F1699581467325-image1.imageformat.lightbox.1055172521.jpg" style="width: 766px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib">ANYmal is a four-legged robot for the inspection and maintenance of technical systems. (Photograph: Robotic Systems Lab / ETH Zurich)<h2 id="isPasted">Robots clearly better – in terms of components</h2>The initial result surprised even the researcher: if one compares the individual components of machines and humans such as microphones with ears, cameras with eyes or drive systems with muscles, the technical components always fare better in terms of key sensory-motor properties. These days, for instance, carbon fibres are used, which are harder than bones. If we disregard other properties of the human bone, such as the fact that it is self-healing, the technical solution is clearly superior in terms of mechanical features. The baffling thing, as the ETH professor explains, is as follows: “The question that arises is why we are not able today to construct a robot from these high-quality components that has better powers of movement and perception than humans.”Which brings us to the second result of this comprehensive study: if we consider the activities that humans and machines are asked to carry out, humans are generally superior to robots. Although humanoid robots are also able to walk and run, if we set walking or running speed in relation to body dimensions, weight or energy consumption, most robots are no longer able to keep pace. At 6.1 metres per second, robot MIT-Cheetah runs faster than a jogging human and accordingly lives up to its name. However, the four-legged robot has a high energy consumption (973 watts) and is also only deployed under laboratory conditions. (Photograph: IIT-Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia)</h2>Robots benefit for certain functions from their precision. “For example, when balancing on one leg, robots can easily stiffen their joints, while humans tend to wobble a bit – which costs considerably more energy. Robots can also precisely recognise their joint angles and repeat movements very accurately, which is pretty impressive and somewhat reminiscent of Karate Kid,” says Robert Riener.The results are more mixed for another movement function – picking up objects: while robots can pick up objects extremely quickly, they are not yet able to outdo us regarding our many different hand movements and the manipulative skills of our fingers. And another weakness of robots emerges with regard to various movements such as swimming, crawling and jumping as they are only able to perform some of these movements. By contrast, most humans are easily capable of performing and combining several of these movements. Playing football is cited in the new study as an example of this: machines are still a long way from dribbling, heading or analyse and interprete the strategy of the other players. &nbsp;&nbsp;<img src="https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/wevolver-project-images/froala%2F1699581594040-1699581594040.png" style="width: 766px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib"><h2 id="isPasted">Robots can support us in the future</h2>Are humanoid robots today therefore still just a gimmick? “No, the progress made by robotics in recent years is incredible. We wish to have robots around us so that they can help us with difficult or dangerous tasks. However, our manmade environments are very complex, and it’s therefore not so easy for robots to function here autonomously and without error. Nevertheless, I’m confident that with the powerful technical components that are available we will soon be able to construct more intelligent robots that are capable of interacting with us humans better,” says Riener. Achieving precision is a must in ultrasonic inspections, but it's not always straightforward

Advancing Ultrasonic Inspections

There’s nothing like synergy. And a new high-precision solution for location and heading – a collaboration between <a href="https://indrorobotics.ca" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Indro Robotics</a> and <a href="https://www.tallysman.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Tallysman Wireless</a> – is the result.As you likely know, while GPS is great – and good enough for us driving around using WAZE – its accuracy can leave something to be desired. You might want it to pass through a doorway, or get very close to – without touching – a highly energised electrical component. Depending on what you’re mounting them on, they can be subject to interference that diminishes their performance. The type of connector attaching them to a receiver, even the length of the cable used in that connection, can also detract from optimal signal acquisition and accuracy. The intralogistics specialist STILL, a subsidiary of the KION Group, leads the German project consortium of the Intelligent Motion Control -IMOCO4.E- research project.The goal of the IMOCO4.E project is to enable intelligent trucks to navigate autonomously in a factory or warehouse.In numerous warehousing and production settings, semi-autonomous trucks are already in use and have already proven to be profitable assets. However, they remain constrained by certain limitations.&nbsp;While these trucks can presently detect obstacles and apply brakes independently, achieving complete self-driving capabilities requires further development. There’s a new robot in town. Actually, there are two of them.They’re small but mighty. In fact, numerous universities and robotics labs already use their predecessor for high-level research. That original robot, the AgileX LIMO, was a game-changer when it came to an affordable and flexible platform. Boston University currently has a fleet of LIMOs running custom algorithms and simulations related to how real-world autonomous vehicles will interact in the Smart Cities of the future. (It’s really cool research, and you can read all about it <a href="https://indrorobotics.ca/boston-university-uses-agilex-limo-for-research/" target="_blank">here</a>.)That first LIMO was truly a ground-breaker – and remains an excellent R&amp;D research platform. But now, AgileX has taken things further. For starters, each LIMO has four steering modes: Omnidirectional steering, tracked steering, Ackerman and four-wheel differential.All LIMOs are equipped with obstacle detection. Multiple onboard sensors can pick up on the size, distance and location of obstacles, allowing the robot to navigate its environment without conflict. The newer LIMO models have significant enhancements here, which we'll explore in a moment.Despite their relatively small size – so small an untrained eye might potentially mistake them for a toy – the LIMOs feature a robust, all-metal build and powerful motor. They also feature powerful onboard EDGE computing suitable to pretty much any R&amp;D requirements.&nbsp;<h3>Who Uses the LIMO robot?</h3>There are really two main categories of users, with the first being those in the educational field."This is a great tool for anyone looking to learn ROS, because they can do all of the advanced concepts – obstacle detection, SLAM, teleoperation, to name a few," explains Luke Corbeth, Head of InDro's R&amp;D Sales Division."And we make that really simple through our improved documentation. We’ve basically built a course around it, so it can be used for teaching students."The other main group of users, of course, are on the research side of things."It’s almost always used in labs for multi-agent systems or multiple robot projects. But AgileX didn't rest on its laurels. In response to the availability of new technologies – along with a wish-list from existing clients – the company has taken things further with its new LIMO PRO and the LIMO ROS2."Obviously as research in autonomy advances, so do the computational requirements," explains Corbeth. "So it’s very important as a robotics manufacturer to stay ahead of the curve so that the hardware meets up with the current research requirements of the day."To that end, the new versions feature upgrades on computational power, sensors and run-time."The big difference is in compute – we're moving from the Jetson Xavier to the Jetson Orin Nano on the LIMO PRO and the INTEL NUC on the LIMO ROS2. Both of these are actually massive upgrades."The Orin Nano is a very powerful EDGE computer. That power translates into more stable multi-sensor data fusion and speed with SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) processing.Speaking of SLAM, the LIMO PRO and LIMO ROS2 come with a new LiDAR unit. While the original LIMO used the very capable EAI X2L unit, the new versions come with the EAI T-mini Pro."Plus, the battery in the new unit goes from an hour of run-time to 2-1/2 hours – with a standby of four hours," adds Corbeth.&nbsp;<h3>SOFTWARE</h3>Not surprisingly, the two new versions also feature some software upgrades. The LIMO PRO and ROS2 versions come with Ubuntu 20.04 (the original LIMO runs version 18.04). In terms of ROS (Robot Operating System) libraries, the first generation LIMO is outfitted with ROS1 Melodic. The LIMO PRO features both ROS1 Noetic and ROS2 Foxy. The LIMO ROS2 has ROS2 Humble onboard.Already have some of the first-generation LIMOs in your lab? No problem."The new models can co-exist with the original LIMO," says Corbeth. The safety of pedestrians and cyclists is important in any major city.Bike lanes and crosswalks are the most obvious signs that we create infrastructure for this purpose. But there are limits to what that infrastructure can do.Winter, for example, creates additional threats. Ice and snow are the most obvious problems, but potholes and deep puddles can also cause havoc – particularly for cyclists. Snow can accumulate quickly in a storm – and it’s not uncommon for snow plowed from the roadway to sometimes spill over into bike lanes (and even on sidewalks).That’s part of the reason why Indro Robotics has built an innovative solution that will be put to the test this winter. That’s a province of Ontario initiative which “capitalizes on the economic potential of advanced automotive technologies and smart mobility solutions such as connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs), and electric and low-carbon vehicle technologies, while enabling the province’s transportation and infrastructure networks to plan for and adapt to this evolution.”And while bicycles aren’t connected and autonomous vehicles yet, we felt robotics could play a role in helping to ensure the safety of cyclists in the Smart City of the future. Specifically, we thought an autonomous robot equipped with the right sensors and processing might help to detect safety issues in bike lanes in the winter.“The idea behind the robot is we want to prolong the use of bike lanes in Ottawa, but also ensure the safety of bike lanes,” explains Indro Robotics Account Executive Luke Corbeth.“There’s really two parts to this: The&nbsp;first is a machine vision element to see if conditions are good enough for biking – no ice, not too many leaves, etc. On the safety side, the Street Smart Robot is more concerned with detecting things like potholes and cracks. And the idea is if you’re able to identify those things, the right resources can be deployed faster and more efficiently to solve the problem in a timely manner.”So that’s the idea behind the SSR. Now, let’s take a look at the technology.Below: A look at the specs of the AgileX&nbsp;Bunker Pro platform, used in SSR. We’ve upgraded the battery for a four-hour run time:<img src="https://images.wevolver.com/eyJidWNrZXQiOiJ3ZXZvbHZlci1wcm9qZWN0LWltYWdlcyIsImtleSI6ImZyb2FsYS8xNjk4Njk0NDA5MjE1LVNTUiBQb3N0IC0gQnVua2VyIFBybyBTcGVjcy5wbmciLCJlZGl0cyI6eyJyZXNpemUiOnsid2lkdGgiOjk1MCwiZml0IjoiY292ZXIifX19" style="width: 766px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib" alt="Bunker Pro Specs"><h3 id="isPasted">Built Tough</h3>If you’re going to be out and about in an Ottawa winter – where temperatures have reached as low as -33°C – you need a platform suitable for the environment. InDro selected the AgileX <a href="https://indrorobotics.ca/bunker-pro/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Bunker Pro</a> as the starting point.With an IP67 Ingress Protection rating, the Bunker Pro is highly impervious to water and particulate matter – which it will encounter in abundance on Ottawa streets. The treads give an edge over wheels when it comes to navigating over ice, snow and potholes. With a full charge, the platform can run for some four hours – even when it’s cold out.But the platform is just the start. InDro engineers had to put considerable thought into the kinds of sensors that would help the Street Smart Robot carry out its task while safely avoiding cyclists, pedestrians, or other obstacles it might encounter. And that began with four wide-angle pinhole cameras. “The pinholes are just to give the operator a better understanding of their environment and situational awareness,” explains Corbeth. And while we say “operator” here, it might be more appropriate to say “observer.” Though initial deployments will involve teleoperation, the SSR has been built to carry out its tasks autonomously. We anticipate that down the road (or bike path), a person will simply be involved in monitoring missions in case human intervention is required.That autonomy will be carried out by a combination of computing power, our InDro Autonomy software stack, and a plethora of sensors.&nbsp;<h3>Sensors, Sensors, Sensors</h3>The Street Smart Robot is equipped with front- and rear-facing depth cameras. These cameras have two visual sensors each, placed roughly the same distance apart as human eyes. That separation – as in human vision – allows the SSR to perceive the world in depth. Onboard computation (we’ll get to that) calculates how far obstacles might be in the robot’s immediate surroundings, and whether it needs to slow down, stop or change course to avoid obstacles.The depth cameras are supplemented by two 270° 2D LiDAR sensors – which are devoted almost exclusively to obstacle avoidance and safety. There are two additional 3D LiDARS, placed to assist with Simultaneous Localization and Mapping, as well as a GPS and IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit). But they don’t do a lot on their own. They require software and computational power to give their data meaning. Here, the SSR has a Jetson ORIN AGX for EDGE computing. The ROS2 operating system software lives onboard in <a href="https://indrorobotics.ca/commander/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">InDro Commander</a> – a module we’ve created for rapid integration of sensors and 5G remote operations. Commander can be thought of as the glue that holds everything together.But still, there’s the issue of making sense of the data. How will the Street Smart Robot identify ice, water, leaves, snow, potholes, debris etc? And how will it determine whether they are significant enough to require a City of Ottawa maintenance crew to take action?Here, the SSR will be going to school. And by that, we mean a combination of Machine Vision and Machine Learning will teach it what’s worth reporting and what isn’t. One way is to take actual images you expect to see on the bike path and identify which ones are significant and which can be ignored.“For example, you could mount a camera on an actual bicycle and then use that dataset to train the robot,” says Corbeth. “But there are a couple of approaches. There’s also obviously the simulation element. You can use specific engines that have high-fidelity graphics to simulate possible different environments in high resolution. And you can use that simulated data for training.”&nbsp;<h3>Then what?&nbsp;</h3>In the early stages, there will be a human operator at the helm. They’ll likely see some of those obstacles with the pinhole cameras, but from the start we anticipate that the onboard AI will trigger an alert for the operator. Once the operator confirms that the image is worthy of the attention of a maintenance crew, they will contact the city directly.That’s how things will start. Once we’ve established a high confidence level that the Machine Vision is correctly identifying anomalies, that process can be automated. The SSR will be programmed to automatically send an alert to the city, complete with a captured image of the potential problem and GPS coordinates.“It’s the idea of anomaly detection – detecting and flagging anomalies. The SSR will also likely be able to identify the severity of the anomaly on a one-to-five scale. And that’s no different with the Street Smart Robot.InDro Robotics previously built <a href="https://indrorobotics.ca/indro-robotics-sentinel/" target="_blank">Sentinel</a>, a workhorse for remote asset inspection. That robot incorporated an AgileX <a href="https://indrorobotics.ca/bunker-4/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Bunker platform</a>, an InDro <a href="https://indrorobotics.ca/commander/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Commander</a> integration module for sensors and remote teleoperations, and several other sensors. It’s a great robot that has proven itself in the most demanding conditions.The Street Smart Robot builds on the success and learnings of Sentinel with additional compute power, many more sensors, a more robust design and extended operational range. And that opens the SSR up to many other tasks beyond bicycle paths.“That’s what really excites me about this project – the idea that this technology is transferable across other inspection verticals,” says Corbeth. “This particular robot could be used in agriculture, and the track platform is really good in mining. I could envision this exact same robot in those two verticals, and others.”&nbsp;<h3>The 5G Connection</h3>When dealing with multiple sensors in real-time, a solid data bandwidth is crucial. Here, SSR is outfitted with a high-speed modem and special antennaes for optimizing 5G and 4G signals. As Luke Corbeth says: “It’s a bad-ass robot.”And it is. But we’re also excited about the project itself.The Smart City of the future will have connected, embedded sensors (including on robots) helping with everything from traffic flow to updated weather and road conditions. Cyclists are a big part of any major urban centre, and the prospect of helping to ensure their safety appeals to us.
